Enrolments Newsletter Term 4 2024 - 13 December
From the Principal

From the Principal

Hello from all of us here at Pymble.

As we head into the Christmas holiday break, we have much to celebrate here at the College. In exciting news, our Year 12 students have achieved outstanding results in all HSC subjects with performance or major work requirements. Across Drama, Dance, Music, Textiles and Design, Visual Arts, and Design and Technology, Pymble students received 82 nominations in total for the NSW showcase or exhibition of exemplary work in these courses. We are incredibly proud of our Class of 2024 and look forward to sharing their full HSC results with you when they are released.

Wise Phones replace smartphones at Pymble

We are also thrilled to see our Pymble Wise Phone initiative has been received as we hoped – with excitement and relief that the College has delivered a practical solution for our students and their families.

In case you missed the news, the College has offered to provide all current and incoming students in Years 4 to 8 2025 with a Pymble Wise Phone, which will give them access to age-appropriate mobile phone features, including camera, tap payments, SMS, geo-tracking and other tools, while disabling social media apps and internet browser until they reach 16 years of age. This is in response to research and extensive consultation with students and parents confirming the negative impact of social media and endless scrolling.

To date, two-thirds of students in Years 4 and 5, along with the entire Year 6 and Year 7 cohorts have opted in and the remaining Year 4 and 5 students have chosen no phone, for now.

It’s a bold step, we know, but one our community is proud to take together to reclaim childhood for our girls. Our hope is that by going down this pathway, other communities will follow suit and help us create a better world for all our young people.

Visions from ‘The Valley’

Meanwhile, work continues to enhance the incredible facilities at Vision Valley, our Outdoor Education site at Arcadia in north-west Sydney, just 45 minutes’ drive away from our main campus.

You may be aware the College purchased the site from Wesley Mission in 2020 to provide the missing piece of our Watch Us Change the World strategy. Vision Valley has since become ‘base camp’ for our Outdoor Education Continuum for K-12, which empowers our girls to be courageous and to approach new challenges with optimism and excitement. Focus areas of the continuum include personal growth, connection to peers, life skills, leadership and environmental stewardship, developed through a series of progressively challenging outdoor experiences for students to navigate, together, in a safe and facilitated manner.

For instance, our Kindergarten to Year 2 girls start off with short daytime sessions of nature walking, bush art and campfire experiences before stepping up to their first overnight experience at Vision Valley in Year 3, followed by multi-day adventure-based learning programs in Years 4 to 6. Year 7 students spend five days based at the Valley, hiking, paddling and camping. Year 8 builds on these skills with a five-day expedition to Colo River, and Year 9 undertake our flagship Residential Program, where they live onsite at Vision Valley for four weeks and undertake a series of short off-site expeditions in surrounding bushlands, beaches and national parks. On selected Year 9 Residential Programs our girls are joined by boys from partner schools as part of our commitment to providing genuine co-educational opportunities to develop healthy and respectful relationships.

We have worked incredibly hard to ensure our vision for our Outdoor Education Continuum and its benefits are known and understood by students and their families, especially in relation to our Year 9 Residential Program, which is also tech-free (and therefore phone-free) for the entire four weeks. I’m thrilled to say this world-leading program has continued to go from strength to strength and is now an important rite of passage for our Upper School girls, as evidenced by feedback from the girls and research into the program by the University of Western Sydney. Post-program surveys show an increase in confidence and resilience (100%), self-reliance and independence (97.4%), and the development of respectful relationships (90.4%) among both female and male participants. We are incredibly proud of our girls for embracing this opportunity with a ‘have a go’ attitude that builds each year as they progress through our series of outdoor experiences.

Vision Valley grows more potential for new learning opportunities every day, with landscaping that now reflects the natural environment, and which will ultimately add more flat camping spaces for our Outdoor Education Programs and family events.

This landscaping work is in addition to new facilities which will be completed shortly, including the Kookaburra and Wedgetail Outdoor Learning Classrooms.

Hopefully, you are as excited as we are about the opportunity for your daughter to step outside her comfort zones and experience a whole new world of learning at Vision Valley in the company of supportive peers and our fully qualified Outdoor Education team. As you can see from the feedback below, our students and their families have noted an increase in confidence, resilience, and sense of belonging, and we have no doubt your daughter will, too.

“I love that you can let your imagination run wild at Vision Valley.”
– Year 5 student

“I never thought I’d be up for a camping experience but I was very motivated by my daughter’s sense of adventure and her love for Vision Valley. She really encouraged me to take the leap. It was a bonding experience on so many levels; with my daughter, with other mums, and for my daughter with her friends. Most definitely a weekend to remember for us, and I hope I get to experience it again one day!”
– Mother of Year 4 student (after the Mum and Daughter campout)

“…we discovered that we really liked spending time outdoors, and that it helps strengthen our bonds and connections with those around us. It just kind of changes you.”

– Year 9 student

“I definitely feel more confident and am less likely to be upset by setbacks.”
– Year 9 student

“To see your child return with this huge inside light on and just feel like they can achieve anything and do anything makes me feel very emotional.”

– Parent of student on Year 9 program

We have much to be grateful for, and much to look forward to. For now, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year until we connect again in 2025.

Secondary School Enrolment Update

Secondary School Enrolment Update

I’m delighted to introduce our newest team member, Kylie Campbell, who will be looking after our future students and families entering Years 7 to 11 in 2025. Kylie is a highly experienced enrolment manager and a wonderful addition to our team. I will remain as Director of Enrolments, however, Kylie will be your point of contact and will capably steer you through your daughter’s enrolment journey and commencement at Pymble.

Another year has flown by and we have welcomed over 400 new students to life at Pymble in 2024. We are very appreciative of all the wonderful people we meet every year who make our days so interesting and dynamic and the genuine friendships we make along the way. Thank you to all of you who have connected and engaged with us this year. Whether it is talking on the phone, connecting on a campus tour or sharing a meal at a family’s home (shout out to the Barwicks!), it’s an absolute pleasure to share your hopes and dreams for your daughter and help bring them to life. We look forward to doing it all again in 2025.

I am very proud to be an ex-student of the College and to work with our incoming students. My entire family are engineers, and I am so pleased to see that Engineering is now being offered to our Year 11 2025 students as an HSC subject. This, along with the introduction of Architectural Design in Year 8 Visual Arts, adds to the broad STEM subjects offered at Pymble and demonstrates Pymble’s commitment to create pathways for women in STEM.

Our Year 11s have moved up into their roles as leaders of the College in Year 12 and are preparing for our theme next year. I was so pleased to see that one of our Head Boarding Prefects for 2025 is a student who joined us in Year 10. Leadership here is recognised as what students bring to the College, not how long they have been a student at Pymble

Junior School Enrolment Update

Junior School Enrolment Update

Term 4 was extremely busy in our Junior School with celebrations of learning and community, Grandparents’ Day, the Symphony of Sounds Ensemble Concert, the farewell of our outgoing Junior School Parent Group (JSPG) leaders and the welcome of the incoming 2025 JSPG leaders, the JSPG Movie Night, our focus on kindness to self and others as well as the Years 1 to 2 Celebration of Learning!

Each of our girls had the exciting experience of seeing what her learning will be like in 2025. We were so proud of the courage and Pymble spirit our girls demonstrated as they moved into their new grade, met their new teachers and began to make new friends. Many girls expressed apprehension to start but by the end of the day, everyone left saying it had been a brilliant day!

In Enrolments, we are busily finalising details for our new girls joining Pymble in 2025. We had a morning of perfect weather, refreshments and fun on Hedgehog Lawn in October for the 2025 Kindergarten Welcome Picnic. We welcomed so many of our new girls and their parents to this relaxed picnic providing opportunities to meet each other and form friendships prior to the first day of school.

Links Day took place the following week with our incoming Year 1 to 6 girls arriving at Pymble to spend the day making links with current Pymble students and teachers as well as meeting other new girls joining the College in 2025. New friendships were further cemented the following day at the Year 1 to 6 Welcome Picnic. It was another morning of perfect weather with many new friendships made between parents.

Starting school or starting at a new school is an exciting yet nervous time for families. There is a lot to remember so our pre-commencement information is thoughtfully curated and conveniently compiled in a digital handbook. The handbook includes key staff names, co-curricular offerings, out of school hours care information, transport and meal options. The Enrolments team are working until Friday, 20 December to answer any questions you may have to ensure a seamless transition.

In early 2025, attention will turn to our 2027 cohort. For families who have submitted an application for enrolment for Kindergarten to Year 6 and hold a provisional place for 2027, we will be commencing the enrolment interview process and will be in contact early next year to invite your family to a Junior Pymble Morning

The Junior Pymble Morning gives girls and their parents the opportunity to meet Mrs Kate Brown, Head of Junior School and attend an interview. Your family will also tour the Junior School and have the chance to meet other new girls and their parents.

Prior to the interview, we require copies of your daughter’s 2023 and 2024 school reports, where applicable. Please provide any medical or educational reports that relate to your daughter’s learning. You may send these to Enrol@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

“You both went out of your way to make time to meet with us and have many conversations over email. You then ensured the girls’ enrolment and onboarding was seamless, and our family felt so supported during the entire process.

Thank you both so much for all you have done for our family. Seeing our girls happy and safe in this beautiful school reaffirms to us that we made the right decision.” – Mother of twins in Year 2.

Pymble introduces wiser phone choice for tweens and teens

Pymble introduces wiser phone choice for tweens and teens

Pymble Ladies’ College has launched the Pymble Wise Phone initiative to provide students in Years 4 to 8 (2025) with an age-appropriate alternative to smartphones, which research associates with negative impact on our young people.

Parents in these year groups can choose for their daughters to receive a ‘Wise Phone’, which does not have access to the internet or social media apps until students reach Year 10 or 16 years of age. While parents are responsible for their daughter’s SIM card and phone plan, Wise Phones will be managed by the College, in consultation with students, to support safe and practical applications and features based on each student’s age and year group.

Parents who do not wish their daughter to have a phone at all can opt out or choose to activate a Wise Phone for their daughter later, when the time is right for their family.

Principal of Pymble Ladies’ College, Dr Kate Hadwen said: “We understand that mobile phones play an important role in keeping families connected with their children. However, the negative impact of social media and smartphone addiction on young people is well supported by research.

“As a leading independent girls’ school, we are in a unique position to work with our families and address this issue by providing a solution that promotes responsible and appropriate use of technology and allows our students to learn, play and develop positive relationships in real life and online.”

Parent and student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with 100 per cent take-up by our ear 6 and 7 families.

Year 6 Pymble student, Gabriella Hanna, is excited to step into the brave new world of Year 7 knowing everyone in the cohort will be on the same level of technology.

“At the moment there’s a big disconnect between people who have phones and those who don’t. The Wise Phone is a great option because it will allow us to contact our friends and families when we need to. It will also allow the school to add our My Pymble app and any other things we actually need for Year 7,” said Gabriella.

Gabriella’s mother, Luisa Hanna, said the collective power of families and College staff working together to delay smartphone access for students is a huge relief for parents.

“I felt like we had no options: our daughter is beginning Year 7 next year and, if we wanted her to feel included, we would have had to give in and get her a smartphone and be stuck to deal with the repercussions of that decision.

“This has been a godsend; the answer to our prayers. It allows us to give our daughter a phone that is age appropriate and allows her to test the waters of responsibility for having a phone without all the apps and worrying extras like social media, which are hard to navigate at her age.”

Pymble National Exchange Program

Pymble National Exchange Program

The Middle School National Exchange program allows Year 8 students the opportunity to explore a new environment, build independence and grow new connections.

This year, 30 Pymble students have enjoyed experiencing life in different parts of Australia, from Toowoomba to Tasmania and more!

Annika in Year 8 travelled to Brisbane for the national exchange program and enjoyed experiencing life in another state and a special bond with her exchange family. She shares her experience below:

  1. Why did you want to participate in the National Exchange Program?

I wanted to take part in the national exchange because I wanted to experience different environments so I could see how other people work in a different learning space. I also wanted to do it so I could make new friends that I could create a special bond with.

  1. What surprised you about life in Brisbane?

Going to Brisbane was incredible; everyone was so nice and welcoming. It was definitely a different experience, but one that I enjoyed very much.

  1. What did you find challenging?

Leaving my exchange family was difficult because they were so welcoming and kind to me, and we created such a special bond, so it was sad to leave them, but it was even more challenging to leave my exchange buddy since we built such a strong friendship.

  1. Was there a special moment or memory that you will treasure?

A special memory that I will always cherish is when we went over to her family’s farm, which was a blast. I learnt about the history of their farm and about milking cows which gave me an insight of what it was like to grow up on a farm.

  1. What have you learned about yourself during this experience?

I have learnt to be more independent and courageous so I can try new things and become more self-sufficient.

  1. What would you tell someone thinking of participating in the exchange program in the future?

If you have the chance to go on national exchange, then I would certainly take it because it is so much fun and you will create memories and friends that last a lifetime!

Meet Tiarna Williams (Pymble 2020)

Meet Tiarna Williams (Pymble 2020)

It seems like yesterday that I was literally running back to Lang house at the end of day to make sure I got first dibs at afternoon tea! I also miss my chats with Mrs. Burgess (usually about the Beatles), catching up with Albert at dinner and hanging out with the girls in the common room. My time as a boarder at Pymble did not come without its challenges, but I am so grateful for being able to experience Pymble life and I treasure the memories I made.

My life since graduating from Pymble has only gotten busier and busier… and busier.

During Year 12, I secured early entry into the University of Wollongong and I am currently in my fourth year studying a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Studies. I am really enjoying my studies and I’m hopeful that one day I can work for the United Nations as a human rights lawyer. Last year, I was lucky enough to study in London on exchange for a semester. During my 6 months overseas, I had the opportunity to travel extensively through Europe, visiting many of the ancient sites I studied in Mr. Stewart’s ancient history class! I explored France, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands, as well as many adventures in London.

Towards the end of 2023, I was awarded the prestigious New Colombo Plan scholarship by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This scholarship allows university students to study and work in the Indo-Pacific region. As part of this scholarship, I will be travelling to Singapore later this year to continue my studies and also undertake an internship at the Australian High Commission in Singapore.

Throughout my studies and travel, I’ve continued to compete in tennis, playing for my university in Australia and also overseas. It’s very different tracking through snow to play tennis outdoors – I much prefer the sun! I recently returned from the Australian Open in Melbourne where I was helping out as a mentor and coach during the Evonne Goolagong National Development Camp.

Currently, I’m completing an internship in Melbourne at Australia’s best law firm. I’ll be back home soon to start my fourth year of university. When I get back from Singapore, I will have one more year left to complete my degree and then I’ll be commencing my Masters. Life is very busy but exciting, fulfilling and rewarding.

Year 2 Illustrate Dreamtime

Year 2 Illustrate Dreamtime

During Term 3 in Visual Arts, Year 2 explored the Tjanpi Desert Weavers and the Mimi Spirits; tall, thin beings who inhabited the earth during the Dreamtime in Arnhem Land in Northern Australia. These spirits were said to have taught the Indigenous people how to hunt, paint and take care of the environment.

Students were tasked with either creating a toy or game made of predominantly natural resources that could be made or played with by an Indigenous student or creating their own interpretation of a Mimi. Year 2 was lucky enough to have an exploration session with Sarah Shields, Pymble’s Horticulturalist, before diving into creating their designs.

Year 4 Outdoor Education

Year 4 Outdoor Education

In August, Year 4 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure at Webbs Creek during their Outdoor Education Program. The days were packed with excitement as they took on kayaking, navigating the waters with confidence and teamwork. Mud Mania had the students running into a muddy obstacle course, where they embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and plenty of laughter.

For those seeking a thrill, abseiling down steep rock faces tested their courage, while the flying fox gave them the exhilaration of soaring through the treetops. The program also included a challenging bushwalk up The Castle, where the students pushed themselves to reach the summit and were rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Throughout the program, the students demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and a deepening connection with the natural world, making it a truly enriching experience.

Bravo Year 6!

Bravo Year 6!

What a performance! Every student in Year 6 performs in the musical and after many months of dedicated rehearsals, they all absolutely dazzled in Seussical the Musical.

Well done to our Year 6 students for embracing the opportunity to perform in a full Broadway musical performance (with two acts!), and for showing a great sense of creativity, responsibility and teamwork to bring together an exceptional performance.

Expert in residence on international study pathways

With many Pymble students keen to explore university options overseas after graduation, we were delighted to welcome Amy Rogers, Consultant with Carney, Sandoe and Associates, to Pymble during August as our visiting expert in residence to increase our understanding of study pathways to the USA.

Amy brought a wealth of experience from her 15 years at Miss Porter’s School in Connecticut, where she served as Dean of College Counseling and contributed significantly to the school’s Center for Global Leadership. Her leadership extends to roles at several prestigious institutions, including The Taft School and Phillips Academy Andover, where she has influenced college counselling, admissions and educational leadership. She holds a B.A. in English from Bucknell University and an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. With a passion for helping people design their best lives, she is also a certified coach with expertise in positive psychology.

During her stay, Amy presented workshops to a professional network of careers advisors from ICGS Schools on supporting student aspirations for study at US colleges and to parents and students of ICGS Schools on things to think about when considering studying in the USA.

Thank you, Amy, for sharing your valuable advice.
